Nature-Positive and Climate-Resilient Solutions

Climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation are closely connected. Addressing them requires approaches that reduce climate risks while protecting and restoring the natural systems on which people, communities and economies depend.
Thriving Solutions supports governments, development partners and other stakeholders in developing strategies, policies and programmes that work with nature to strengthen resilience, regenerate ecosystems and improve the management of water, land and natural resources. We also support the integration of nature, biodiversity and ecosystem-based adaptation into wider climate policies, adaptation plans and regional climate-action frameworks.
Nature-based Solutions
Nature-based Solutions protect, sustainably manage and restore natural and modified ecosystems while addressing social, environmental and economic challenges. Our work includes:
- Assessing opportunities for Nature-based Solutions within water, climate, land and urban systems.
- Integrating NbS into policies, strategies, plans and programmes.
- Identifying and prioritising suitable NbS approaches based on local needs and conditions.
- Developing NbS frameworks, guidance and decision-support tools.
- Assessing institutional roles, coordination needs and implementation barriers.
- Facilitating stakeholder engagement and participatory planning.
- Building the capacities of institutions and other stakeholders.
Ecosystem Restoration and Biodiversity
Healthy ecosystems regulate water, protect soils, store carbon, support biodiversity and reduce exposure to climate hazards. We support stakeholders in:
- Assessing ecosystem degradation and identifying restoration priorities.
- Integrating biodiversity, ecosystem services and restoration into climate, water and land-management planning.
- Applying watershed, landscape and ecosystem-based approaches.
- Developing practical restoration programmes and action plans that deliver environmental, social and economic benefits.
Strengthening Climate Resilience
By protecting and restoring natural functions, we help stakeholders identify relevant approaches, establish clear priorities and translate them into practical programmes and coordinated action. Our systems approach considers environmental, social, institutional and economic conditions to ensure that proposed solutions are context-specific, inclusive and realistic. Our work can help:
- Improve water retention, recharge and water quality.
- Reduce vulnerability to drought, flooding, erosion and land degradation.
- Strengthen soil health and the resilience of agricultural landscapes.
- Protect the ecosystems and natural resources on which food production and livelihoods depend.
- Reduce climate-related risks to communities and resource systems.
- Integrate adaptation, ecosystem restoration and Nature-based Solutions into climate strategies, action plans and investment priorities.
- Identify governance, policy and financing conditions needed to scale ecosystem-based climate solutions.
